Visual Studio 2012 – Faulting Module Fix

In my continued effort to pay-it-forward to my fellow Developers.
I have resolved an issue with VSTO2012 that was driving me up the wall.

Symptoms of this problem are :

  • When Visual Studio opens it crashes
  • When hitting a breakpoint it crashes (and continually).
  • Also the project is dormant as you have walked away and come back to see the project is either closed or restarting itself in recovery.
  • You are seeing this in the event viewer as well:
    Faulting module path: %ROOT%\Windows\syswow64\KERNELBASE.dll

Report Id: 74f5f80b-91f4-11e3-82aa-74f06dc45396

The Fix Step by Step:
1. CloseVisual Studio
2. Go to Services and set
“Performance Logs & Alerts” to automatic and start.

3.Remove the key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]
4.Remove the key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0]
5.Remove the key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0_Config]
